Tourist information

Welcome to Oranjewoud and the Friese Wouden: a forested landscape with its own natural rhythm. Together, they make up the heavily wooded area of Friesland where you can experience the abundance of scenic beauty and be encouraged to discover the genuine historic character of the region.

Friesland is also home to forests where royalty once lived: Oranjewoud. This royal forest is located to the east of Heerenveen and consists of various former country estates with long lanes, parks with fully mature oaks and beeches, a handful of country mansions, bodies of water, and small meadows tucked among the woods. In the Overtuin, a park across from a country mansion known as Huize Oranjewoud, you can wander over meandering paths and past artfully pruned hedges, a serpentine wall and an herb garden.

The museum park is another attractive area. It was originally constructed in the Baroque style and includes the Museum Belvédère, a museum for modern art that relates to the Frisian landscape. Its low block-shaped building occupies such a modest place between sky, water and earth, that it fits perfectly into its royal surroundings.

Friese Wouden

‘It’s the prettiest piece of the Province of Drenthe but located in the Province of Friesland’ is how people from Drenthe jokingly describe the Friese Wouden. Whereas lakes are important features in western and central Friesland, its southeastern region has a different look. Here, small-scaled landscapes dotted with scenic forests, wooded banks, meadows and meandering brooks are the rule. And there’s lots to do here. The Friese Wouden, for instance, has hiking trails, a play woods and a splashing pond.

Of all the Frisian stream valleys, the one known as the Koningsdiep has best withstood the tests of time. The Tjonger isn’t just the only linguistic boundary within the Netherlands’ borders; it’s also a charming little river. In the Tjonger Valley, engaging natural scenery goes hand in hand with a rich historical background. Another beauty spot can be found in the river valley landscape on both sides of the Linde where you can see marshes, heaths, forests, tree-lined pathways and open meadows.
