Zeitgeist

In this Lounge, violinist Rosanne Philippens and musician friends try to capture the zeitgeist of roughly the fin de siècle to the interbellum period. Rosanne: ‘I’m fascinated by how art in that period of time, more than at any other time, seems to express what was going on in society. An atmosphere of tradition versus innovation, a curiosity about other cultures, the all-changing industrial revolution, the rise of jazz. Radio 1 presenter Pieter van der Wielen will be interviewing historian Geert Mak about these developments and tensions in Europe, and we, as a quartet or sextet, will reflect on this with compositions from that time, by Ravel, Schönberg and Gershwin.'

‘I’ve always loved the format of presenting music in an intimate lounge setting, which is why I’m so happy that artistic director Yoram Ish-Hurwitz and I have been able to bring this idea to life, complete with some amazing guests, at the festival, and that I, after it had to be postponed several times, can finally be a guest in “my” Lounge.’
