Inspired by an idea of Julia Philippens, composer Thomas Beijer wrote the brand-new jazz violin concerto Technicolor, commissioned by Oranjewoud Festival and the Noord Nederlands Orkest. The Thomas Beijer and Julia Philippens combo is a mouth-watering team-up. One of the frontwomen of Fuse, Philippens never shies away from a challenge, while Thomas Beijer is quickly becoming the kind of composer whose work instantly wins you over. Add to this the adventurous Noord Nederlands Orkest, and you know you are in for an exciting new concert experience! This jazz violin concerto is not a dialogue between classical and jazz, but has turned out to be an actual marriage of the two genres, in which Julia tempts the orchestra into joining her in improvising one moment and the musicians religiously follow the score the next.
Just as unique is the viola concerto written by Russian Benjamin Yusupov for the world-famous Maxim Vengerov and of which three parts will be performed: Postludium and Go Tango for orchestra, and the riotous Rock, with Julia once again soloist, but this time playing the electric violin.
The Metropolis Symphony is Michael Daugherty’s musical answer to the Superman myth, in which he combines jazz, rock and funk with symphonic and avant-garde styles. Red Tape Tango was inspired by the superhero’s life-or-death fight with arch-nemesis Doomsday.
