At first glance, composer Saint-Saëns and poet Apollinaire may seem worlds apart, but their hilarious animal caricatures in the Le Carnaval des Animaux (1886) orchestral suite and Le Bestiaire (1911) collection of poems respectively seem to have been conceived by the same satirical genius. In fact, there are such close affinities between these two masterpieces that every chamber ensemble wants them on the programme together. But how do you that when there is no music for Le Bestiaire and no chamber music version of Le Carnaval? The Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble commissioned composer Piet Swerts to translate the clear musicality of the poems of Le Bestiaire into actual sound and transpose Le Carnaval for (bass) clarinet, strings and piano.
