Enfants Terribles

One of the world’s most famous piano duos is visiting Oranjewoud Festival with a programme bursting with intimacy and bravura.

El Chan by composer and rock guitarist Bryce Dessner is named after a mythical guardian spirit from the underworld and the source of many folktales. He lives in the mystery waters of an ancient pool in the middle of an enchanted Mexican landscape. Woe betide anyone who dares to venture too close …

The opera Les Enfants Terribles by Philip Glass was arranged especially for the Labèque sisters during the first coronavirus lockdown. The source of inspiration was the eponymous book by Jean Cocteau. Following the death of their parents, a brother and sister retreat into a playful fantasy world, like two lost souls who in their isolation cling to a lost or imaginary paradise. Ravel’s Mother Goose forms a tender intermezzo between the two masterpieces.
